Rubbish Bin in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Description:
Bulgaria has a severe refuse problem. As a photographer I feel that documenting environmental problems and solutions is valid in a context of stock photgraphy..

Photo Comments:
This is a straightforward “record” shot where basic techniques to ensure overall sharpness and good exposure are paramount.

A Hummingbird Hawk-Moth.
Description:
A Hummingbird Hawk-Moth (Macroglossum Stellatarum) feeds from a thistle while hovering In The Pirin Mountains In Bulgaria.
This large moth sometimes called a Sphinx Moth, hovers and hums and so is often compared to a hummingbird.
It flies during the day even in rain which is unusual and hovers while it feeds using its long proboscis.
Photo Notes:
I love wildlife photography and macro photography and obviously a photo subject like this demands skills from both.
One of the most important points is to understand the behaviour and habits of the wildlife concerned and I have spent some time observing these moths which are quite common in the Bulgarian mountains.
From the technical point of view I used manual settings to make sure that I could use a fast enough shutter speed and a small enough aperture in all my shots, relying on RAW to compensate for exposure variations.
I used a Canon 100mm macro lens.
Although this lens has two auto focus settings I still felt it better to use manual focus and move my camera and lens to focus accurately.
One good point of using digital capture is that you can take a lot of pictures without worrying about changing film or the overall cost.
I obtained a few good shots and this is one I was happy with.

Close up of a Bulgarian Rose.
Description:
This is a macro photo of a Bulgarian rose with water drops.
Photo Notes:
Bulgaria is famous for its roses which are an important component of the national economy. The products of Bulgarian roses are widely used in the international Perfume industry.
From the photographic point of view I had two objectives:
First of all I chose a subject which is inherently beautiful according to many cultural norms and then I chose to enhance the beauty photographically.
I decided on a close up approach to emphasise a level of detail often missed with the naked eye.
I used a combination of studio flash and a Canon 100 mm macro lens to ensure maximum sharpness.
One of the potential conflicts here is to use a small aperture for maximum depth of field while at the same time avoiding the diffraction defects that come at very small apertures.
