Paragliding over the cliffs of Albena

Caption:

Paragliding over the cliffs of Albena.

Description:

Albena is one of Bulgaria’s most famous Black Sea resorts.

Paragliding is a recreational and competitive flying sport.

A paraglider is a free flying foot launched aircraft.

Albena is one of the most famous seaside resorts on the Black Sea coast and is named after a character in a drama by the Bulgarian writer Yordan Yovkov.

Photo Notes:

Early morning on the beach I saw a number of paragliders catching the thermals and flying over the sand.

I realised that they were flying from the cliffs overlooking the beach.

I grabbed my photo bag and went up to the top of the cliff where they were quite close overlooking the sands and the resort of Albena.

As they were moving about, sometimes further, sometimes nearer I felt a zoom lens was the best choice.

I used my Canon 70-300 IS zoom although the gliders were near enough to use the shorter focal lengths.

I tried in many cases to get some back lighting and exploit the clear colours of the gliders and the sky.

Parasailing above the clouds in Albena stock photo of Bulgaria by john rocha

Parasailing above the clouds in Albena, Bulgaria.

Description:

Parasailing, also known as parascending, is a recreational activity where a person is towed behind a vehicle while attached to a specially designed parachute, known as a parasail.

The boat then drives off, carrying the parascender into the air.

If the boat is powerful enough, two or three people can parasail behind it at the same time.

The parascender has little or no control over the parachute.

There are six parts of a parasail.

The harness attaches the pilot to the parasail, which is connected to the boat, or other speeding vehicle, by the tow rope.

The activity is primarily an amusement ride not a sporting activity.

Today it is a popular attraction on beaches all over the world.

Albena is is a seaside resort on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.

It’s near the town of Varna and the resort town of Balchik.

It’s near some other resorts and has fine cliffs and woodland surrounding it.

The resort is named after a female character from a tale by Bulgarian writer Yordan Yovkov.

Photo Notes:

Among the photo challenges with this picture was the extreme contrast of the light over the sea.

Interestingly I met an event photographer on the beach who told me that he had to shoot jpegs because his clients wanted pictures from their adventures very quickly.

Not surprisingly he had trouble with both contrast and noise.

Luckily, stock photography is consistent with a more measured approach.

I used the RAW setting to give me more information to work with and as this is a classic telephoto type shot I used the long end of my 75-300mm Canon IS zoom.

Kite in Albena stock photo by john rocha

Description:

A kite is a flying tethered aircraft that depends upon the tension of a tethering system.

Kites and kite flying are now popular all over the world while the kite itself seems to have originated approximately 2,800 years ago in Weifang, China.

Albena is is a seaside resort on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.

It is near some other resorts and has fine cliffs and woodland surrounding it.

Photo Notes:

The beach in summer is full of action.

Here the summer breeze provides ideal conditions for kite flying and I was attracted by the bright colours against the blue sky.

For this shot I used the Canon IS 70-300mm zoom which made it possible to frame the moving kite accurately.
