The Cyrillic alphabet is used in six Slavic national languages and is also used by many other languages of Eastern Europe.

The alphabet has official status with many organisations.

In Bulgaria the development of the Cyrillic alphabet by the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius is celebrated every year on May 24 the Day of Bulgarian Enlightenment and the Slavonic Alphabet.

With the accession of Bulgaria to the European Union on 1 January 2007, Cyrillic became the third official alphabet of the EU together with Latin and Greek
