The Mound of Brotherhood in Sofia the capital of Bulgaria.
Description:
This Obelisk is one of the most famous Socialist Realist monuments in Sofia the capital of Bulgaria and rises in the south-eastern corner of the Borisova Gradina park – the Boris Gardens.
It was built in 1956 to commemorate those who fought and fell in the struggle against fascism from the failed Bulgarian communist uprising of September 1923 to the Red-Army offensive of World War 11.
Partisans with machine guns stand at the base and bas reliefs portray workers, civilians and Soviet Troops.
Photo Notes:
There are those in Bulgaria who would like to destroy the monuments that emphasise the relationship with Russia.
This means that in some ways, monuments like this are an endangered species.
One role of photography is document our environment day by day so that changes, or potential changes can be noticed.
I deliberately chose a low viewpoint and used the Sigma 10-20mm zoom.
