Slavcho – A Bulgarian Shepherd.
Description:
Slavcho, who is in his late seventies is a shepherd in Koprivshtitsa.
He goes up in the mountains for days at a time, returning home to get supplies and see his family.
Koprivshtitsa is one of the most picturesque towns in Bulgaria.
It has many colourful national revival buildings from the 19th. century.
It is about 100 miles from Sofia and straddles the river Topolnitsa.
It is famous historically as the place where the first shot was fired in the 1867 uprising against the Ottoman occupation.
Kalachev Most – Shooters Bridge, commemorates this.
Since 1956 there has been a national festival of Bulgarian folklore which takes place every 5 years.
Koprivshtitsa is a centre for hiking and sightseeing in the Sredna Gora mountains..

Photo Comments:
An environmental photo like this demands patience and empathy.
I chatted to Slavcho for quite a while so that we could both relax and it was clear he was happy to be photographed.
Just as important we had to get the sheep on board.
I later sent him a disk with a few pictures.

Pine Trees In The Pirin Mountains In Bulgaria.
Description:
Pines are coniferous evergreen trees of the genus pinus in the family pinaceae. Many examples of this beautiful tree flourish in the Pirin Mountains
Photo Notes:
I enjoy photographing trees.
Each one is different – not only from other trees but different seasons bring changes too.
Another characteristic is that trees are so much a part of our environment and healthy trees are a sign of good air and low pollution levels.
Imagine our world with no trees or sick trees.
For this photo I chose a low viewpoint to emphasise the shape of the trees against a plain sky background with the low clouds showing the height of the mountains.
As my position was important I used a zoom lens to ensure accurate framing.
This time I chose my Tamron 28-75mm SP zoom and used my Cullman monopod to keep things steady.
