Detail from the Soviet Army Monument in central Sofia in Bulgaria
Description:
The Soviet Army Monument was built in 1954 by a team of architects and artists working under Danko Mitov.
This famous monument has survived the local ideological changes.
Friezes of troops in combat surround the base of the 34-metre high monument, while a red army soldier leads a Bulgarian couple and their baby ever onwards.
There are separate groups of statuary in the front.
This is one of the finest examples of socialist realism in Bulgaria.
Around the monument today is a skateboarding area.
The new Metro station is nearby.

Photo Comments:
This is a detail from one of the most famous monuments in Sofia.
I chose to isolate the figures against the sky and waited until the light was right.
As I needed to use a long lens – my 70-300mm zoom and I wanted good depth of field on a full frame camera I put my Canon 5D Mark II on my Benro Traveller tripod and used mirror lockup, with an auto release to prevent camera shake.

Photo Comments:
I felt this image called for wide angle treatment and to provide added interest I included the flowerbed in the foreground.
As a small aperture was needed to ensure sufficient depth of field I chose aperture priority and mounted my Canon on a Manfrotto tripod.

The Mound of Brotherhood in Sofia the capital of Bulgaria.
Description:
This Obelisk is one of the most famous Socialist Realist monuments in Sofia the capital of Bulgaria and rises in the south-eastern corner of the Borisova Gradina park – the Boris Gardens.
It was built in 1956 to commemorate those who fought and fell in the struggle against fascism from the failed Bulgarian communist uprising of September 1923 to the Red-Army offensive of World War 11.
Partisans with machine guns stand at the base and bas reliefs portray workers, civilians and Soviet Troops.
Photo Notes:
There are those in Bulgaria who would like to destroy the monuments that emphasise the relationship with Russia.
This means that in some ways, monuments like this are an endangered species.
One role of photography is document our environment day by day so that changes, or potential changes can be noticed.
I deliberately chose a low viewpoint and used the Sigma 10-20mm zoom.
