Todor Kableshkov Statue in Koprivshtitsa.
Description:
This bronze statue of Todor Kableshkov stands in Koprivshtitsa.
Todor Kableshkov (1851-1876) was the local station master and one of the leaders against the Turnovo occupation of Bulgaria who took part in the April uprising of 1876.
Koprivshtitsa is one of the most picturesque towns in Bulgaria.
It has many colourful National Revival buildings from the 19th. century.
It’s about 100 miles from Sofia and straddles the river Topolnitsa.
It’s famous historically as the place where the first shot was fired in the 1867 against the Ottoman occupation.
Shooters Bridge (Kalachev Most) commemorates this.
Since 1956 there has been a national festival of Bulgarian folklore which takes place every 5 years.
Koprivshtitsa is a centre for hiking and sightseeing in the Sredna Gora mountains.

Photo Comments:
Photographing a statue like this is a bit like shooting a portrait.
It’s important to focus carefully on the eyes, the nearest one especially.
But there are some differences:
Statues cannot respond to direction so the mood is fixed.
Statues cannot move or change posture so you have to select the viewpoint carefully.
One good point is that bright sunshine doesn’t make for screwed up eyes!
This is one of a series of pictures I am taking to illustrate the national heroes of Bulgaria who are often not much known outside the country.
